Protein is the building block of our bodies and is essential for growth and repair.
And you can’t help but notice the growing trend in the health and fitness industry of highlighting the protein content of what we are eating. This trend is a marketers dream, adding extra protein to just about anything they can, along with a higher price tag.
But how much protein does the body need?
- In the UK, adults are advised to eat 0.75g of protein for each kilogram they weigh
- On average, men should eat 55g and women 45g of protein
As a vegetarian and a keen runner, I much prefer to pick up a tin of beans or lentils as an alternative source to meat. As well as protein, beans are rich in antioxidants, fibre, protein, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, potassium, copper and zinc.
The best thing is, is that they are versatile and affordable with so many different varieties to choose from!
